A child sits well back in a deep armchair with rolled arms, holding a large book open in both hands with the pages facing away. Both pages are blank. The child is grinning over the top of the book, hair swept across the forehead, legs dangling with sandals on. On the floor below, a dog lies stretched out facing left, chin near its paws, ears flopped forward and a solid dark nose. On the other side a cat sits bolt upright with its tail curled around in front of it and whiskers drawn out to both sides.

The three of them are quite separate, which makes this sheet easy to divide: a child can do the dog while someone else does the cat.

Those blank pages are the best thing here. Whatever is being read aloud is up to you, and writing or drawing something on them before coloring turns the page into a small story of its own.

Reading to a dog is a real program, not a cute idea. Schools and libraries bring trained dogs in for exactly this, because a child who stumbles over a word in front of an animal gets no reaction at all, and reading speed improves when nothing is at stake.
