A girl has just swung her leg through a soccer ball, caught at the moment of contact with her arms out for balance and her hair lifting. A boy jogs in from the right to meet it. Between and behind them the park is laid out properly: two full trees with thick trunks, a slatted bench standing empty, and flowers dotted through the grass. The ball itself sits low and central, drawn with the usual panel pattern.

The two tree canopies are made of hundreds of small overlapping leaf shapes, which is the long part of this page. The bench, by contrast, is a handful of straight slats and goes in a minute.

The ball is the one object everybody already knows the pattern for, which makes it the easiest place for a younger child to start and feel like they got something right.

A size three ball is what children under eight are meant to use, and it matters more than it sounds. A full size ball is heavy enough that kicking it properly is beyond most small legs, so they learn to toe poke instead, and the habit sticks for years.
