Two children are partway up a climbing frame built as an open cube of bars. One has both hands on a crossbar overhead and a foot hooked up onto a lower rail, mid climb. The other stands inside the frame with a hand on an upright, looking across at the first. Both faces are fully drawn, eyes, noses and wide smiles, and both are in simple tee shirts and shorts with laced shoes.

The frame is the structure that makes this sheet work. It is a grid of straight lines crossing at right angles, which breaks the page into dozens of clean rectangles and gives a child who likes order somewhere to be methodical.

Color the bars one shade all the way round and the cube reads as a single object. Color each face differently and it falls apart into flat shapes, which is worth demonstrating once if you have a child who is starting to notice how drawings suggest depth.

Climbing frames were invented with exactly that in mind. The first one was patented in 1920 by a mathematician who wanted his children to develop an intuition for three dimensional space by moving through a lattice.
