Two very small children sit facing you on a low playground roundabout. A post rises through the middle of the platform and finishes in a round knob, and curved grab bars sweep down from it to the deck so there is something to hold on to. Both children have wide round eyes with lashes and an open grin, and both are holding a bar. Behind them a picket fence runs across the page with rounded bushes pushing through the gaps.
This is one of the gentlest sheets in the collection. The children are drawn with heads nearly as big as their bodies, every line is thick, and nothing overlaps anything else in a way that could confuse a small hand.
The fence is the one repeating pattern. A toddler who alternates two colors along the pickets will produce something that looks far more planned than it was.
A roundabout is a lesson in angular momentum sitting in a playground. Pull your arms and legs in and you speed up; stick a foot out and you slow down. It is the same trick a figure skater uses in a spin, and children work it out without being told.
