Two children stand in front of a fort they have clearly just finished. A sheet has been thrown over a frame and pegged down, sagging in the middle the way a real one does, with the opening held back so you can see into the dark. Crates and boxes are stacked along both sides as walls, and a short ladder leans against the right hand stack. Both children face out, pleased with themselves.
The draped sheet is the interesting shape. It falls in long soft folds and those folds are the one place on the sheet where shading with the side of a pencil will look better than flat color.
The crates are the opposite: straight edges, plain panels, quick to fill. Having both on one page means a child can switch between careful and fast without putting it down.
Den building turns up in child development research often enough to be taken seriously. Making an enclosed space you control, and deciding who comes in, seems to matter to children somewhere around five to nine almost regardless of where they grow up.
