A working lighthouse station, drawn as the tower and the home together rather than the tower on its own. The round column rises through two railed galleries to a domed lantern room topped with a small finial, and its base disappears behind the cottage in front. The cottage is the real subject. Its walls are built from irregular stone blocks, every one outlined and left open, under a pitched roof with a chimney at the back. There is a paned window in the gable, three more across the upper floor and two below, and a lower wing with its own door runs off to the left. Underneath it all sits a rough stone platform of big rounded boulders, with loose horizontal lines suggesting calm water beyond. All that stonework is the reason to reach for this page. There are well over a hundred blocks between the walls and the base, and no two are the same shape, which is the sort of slow repetitive work that some people find genuinely relaxing. Rotating four or five shades at random across the stones gives the best result. A tight uniform approach tends to flatten it, and the wall stops looking like stone.
