Three farm buildings share this page and each one gives you something different to work on. The farmhouse stands on the left with a covered porch running across the front on square posts, a rounded front door, windows on both floors and a gabled window set into the roof above. The barn faces it from the right, wide and solid under a curved gambrel roof, its vertical board siding running top to bottom and its big double doors braced with a diagonal cross on each leaf. A loft window sits above them. Between the two buildings a lattice windmill climbs on a crossbraced tower to a wheel of eight blades. A rail fence runs along the whole front with a few picket sections mixed in, and grass tufts dot the ground line. The scene reads best when the buildings are treated separately rather than as one block. The barn siding is vertical, the farmhouse porch and fence are horizontal, and playing those two directions against each other is what gives the sheet its depth. The windmill blades are the smallest shapes on the page and the last thing to tackle, so leave them until a hand is warmed up.
