Everything about this drawing points upward. The bird stands on a thick square post with its head thrown back and its beak wide open, and the tall lobed comb on top of its skull carries that line further still. A rounded wattle hangs below the beak and one round eye sits high on the face. Its neck is covered in pointed feathers that overlap in neat scallops down to the shoulders, giving a band of small shapes to work through before you reach the plain body. At the back, four long sickle feathers curve up and over in a loose arc, each drawn as a separate closed shape with a few strokes inside. Two scaly legs grip the top of the post, which is ruled with a couple of grain lines. Beyond the bird an ordinary field fence runs across the page with two rails and a line of pointed pickets, and tufts of grass grow at its base. The post is the anchor for the whole composition, sitting dead center and carrying the bird well clear of the fence line so nothing overlaps.
