A goat has climbed onto a bale and stands there quite happily, which is exactly what goats do and why the picture works. Its two horns are the best feature, sweeping back from the top of the head in long curves with close ribbing drawn across them, so they can be banded in alternating tones. Below them two ears stick out sideways, the eyes are large and dark, and a small pointed beard hangs under the chin. The body is slim and almost completely open inside, running back to a short flicked tail. Four thin legs come down to neat hooves, each left clear with no tone laid over it. Under the animal sits the bale, drawn as a plain box seen from one corner so that the top and the front face both show. Short wisps of straw poke out along its edges and a few light strokes suggest packed hay across the faces. A little grass grows at the base where the bale meets the ground. The two subjects differ in character, one boxy and one lean and curved, so they take color in different ways on the same sheet.
