Six little bearded men line up across this page, three at either side of a girl in a long plain dress. Each of them wears a tall cone shaped cap that rises to a sharp point, and each has a full beard reaching down to his belt. They are drawn almost identically, which turns the sheet into an exercise in variation: give every cap a different shade and the row suddenly reads as six separate characters rather than one repeated. Their tunics are belted at the waist and fall to the knee, with a single seam line down the front and nothing else inside. The girl stands taller than all of them in the middle, her long hair falling past her shoulders and her dress dropping in one uninterrupted shape to her feet. Behind the group a few rounded trees rise at either edge and a single curved line marks the ground they stand on. The upper third of the paper is left bare. That open space is deliberate, because a row of seven figures would look cramped without it, and it gives the finished page somewhere to breathe once all those caps are colored in.
