A princess and a unicorn stand face to face inside an oval frame of beads and stars. She has laid one hand flat on its muzzle and it has dipped its head to meet her. Her hair falls in long rippling strands all the way past her knees, matched on the other side by a mane that does exactly the same thing, so the two of them are almost joined by hair across the middle of the drawing. She wears a flower crown and a gown with lace panels and a patterned bodice. The unicorn has a long spiral horn, one foreleg lifted, and a tail that sweeps the bottom of the frame. Flowers, stars and curling flourishes fill all four corners.

This is a long sitting. The hair and mane alone run to hundreds of narrow channels, which is the whole appeal if you like that kind of thing and the whole problem if you do not.

Giving the mane and the hair different treatments is what stops the center of the page turning into one mass.

Medieval apothecaries sold unicorn horn at many times the price of gold. It was narwhal tusk, landed in northern ports and traded south by people who knew exactly what it was.
