A kneeling princess and a small spiny dragon lean toward each other, both smiling, on a page with no background at all.

Two characters share this page and nothing else does. On the right a princess kneels with her skirt pooling out across the ground, a small tiara on her head and a great fall of hair running down past her waist. On the left a little dragon sits up on its haunches to meet her, with three short horns, a pair of bat wings folded back, a row of spines down its back, a banded belly and one clawed hand lifted toward her. Both of them are smiling. A few small pebbles are scattered near their feet.

The absence of background is deliberate and useful. There is nothing to get lost in, the shapes are large, and a child of five can finish both figures comfortably in one go.

The dragon's belly bands and the princess's hair run in the same direction, so they look best treated differently. Bands in alternating tones, hair in one smooth shade.

Western stories made dragons into monsters to be killed, but that is only half the world. In Chinese and Japanese tradition they bring rain and good fortune, and a friendly one like this would raise nobody's eyebrows at all.
