A knight stands near the crest of a hill with both hands on the shaft of a tall pole. The banner at the top is a plain rectangle with nothing on it at all. He wears a helmet, a tunic belted at the waist, a cape falling behind, and greaves down the shins. Away on the right, across a dip in the land, a small castle sits on the far ridge with towers and a flag of its own. The bottom third of the page is a deep band of meadow, drawn as grass blades with open flowers scattered through it.

That blank banner is the best thing on this sheet. It is a large flat panel waiting for a device, so before anyone picks up a pencil, let your child invent one: a creature, a shape, initials, anything.

The meadow will take as long as you want it to. Every blade is separate.

Heraldry had real rules. A coat of arms belonged to one person, not to a family name, and it had to be different from everyone else's, which is why the designs grew steadily stranger over the centuries.
