A knight rides at a trot with his sword held upright and the reins gathered in his free hand. His visor is pushed back, so a calm face shows under the helmet, and two long ribbons of cloak stream out behind his shoulders. The horse lifts both front hooves clear of the ground, mane and tail flowing the same way as the cloak. Small tufts of grass mark the ground line, and everything above the rider stays open white paper.

Outlines here are thick and generously spaced. A four or five year old can fill the horse's body, the saddle cloth and the cloak without crossing an edge, and the fiddly parts, meaning the bridle straps and the sword grip, are easy to skip.

Warm silver pencils look better on plate armor than flat gray, because the slight variation reads as polished metal. Pick one strong shade for the cloak and something quieter, chestnut or dun, for the horse, so the rider stays the thing your eye lands on first.

A warhorse bred for battle was called a destrier. Knights rode an ordinary palfrey on the road and saved the destrier for the day it mattered, because the big horses were expensive to feed and difficult to handle.
