Two round towers rise on either side of this gateway, each one capped with square battlements and a thin pole carrying a pennant. Between them sits a deep arch built from wedge-shaped blocks, and standing square in the opening is a guard in a visored helm, sword lowered in one hand, a long surcoat falling to his knees. Rough paving slabs spread out toward you at the bottom, with grass sprouting at the foot of each tower.
The stonework is the real gift here. Every block is drawn as its own closed shape, which turns most of the sheet into a tidy mosaic that rewards patience without demanding precision. Children who like filling in squares one at a time will stay with this one a long while.
Try three or four related shades across the stones rather than a single flat tone. Real castle walls were never one color, because the masons used whatever stone the nearest quarry gave them.
A gatehouse was the most heavily defended part of any castle for an obvious reason. It was the one hole somebody had deliberately left in the wall, so the passage above it often hid openings the defenders could drop things through.
