The dragon owns the left side of this drawing. Its head turns out toward you with a wide row of teeth showing, horns swept back over a spined neck, one great folded wing filling the space behind. The belly is drawn in broad bands, and the tail ends in a spiked club resting on the ground. Facing it on the right, a knight braces with his sword lifted above the helm and a kite shield raised, a four-pointed star marked across the front of it.
There are two very different textures to work with. The dragon is all curves, bands and spines, while the knight is flat plates and straight edges, so switching between them keeps the sheet from feeling repetitive.
A common choice is green scales, but the banded belly is begging to be done in a second, lighter tone, and a red or copper wing membrane lifts the whole page. Keep the shield simple so the star still reads once everything around it is filled.
The knight who fights a dragon is usually Saint George. Crusaders carried his story back to England in the twelfth century, and Edward III made him the country's patron saint in 1348, which is why the badge turns up on so much English heraldry.
