Three horses walk abreast toward you, filling the middle band of the page, with one rider on each. The helmets are plain domes with a dark slot across the eyes and a band around the brow. The knight in the center carries a long lance with a pennant streaming from just below the head. Every horse is drawn with a broad friendly face, large round nostrils and a patterned cloth beneath the saddle. A single line marks the ground and a few tufts of grass break it. The top third of the sheet is left as open sky.

Three riders in matching kit make this a good sheet for working out a color scheme. Give each knight a different surcoat and keep the horses close in tone, or do the reverse. Either reads as deliberate.

Watch the pennant. Left pale against a filled sky it carries the whole top half of the drawing.

Riding knee to knee in a line took constant practice, because horses dislike being crowded and will drift apart on their own. A formation that held together was the mark of a household that trained together all year.
