This scarecrow grins out from under a wide floppy hat, with straw poking out at his temples and his cuffs. His shirt gives you the most to play with: two square pockets, three round buttons and a patch stitched onto the chest, all drawn as separate closed shapes. Color each patch as a different fabric and the whole figure comes alive. Two large pumpkins flank the post he stands on, and both show curved rib lines that mark where one segment ends and the next begins. Shade every other segment a little darker and the pumpkins turn round instead of flat. The lines throughout are thick and well spaced, which is what a four or five year old needs when working with fat crayons. Nothing here is small enough to frustrate them. Short tufts of grass sit at the base and a single ground line runs behind, leaving most of the lower page open. Preschool teachers can pair this print with a fall unit on farms. Ask the class what the scarecrow is guarding, then let them color the answer into the field around him.
