That empty band is worth keeping. It gives you somewhere to lay a pale wash of blue, or to add a few bubble circles of your own, without crowding either subject.
The corals are where the color goes. Reef heads in the wild run through oranges, magentas and yellows that sit right next to each other, so treat every round shape as its own color instead of shading the whole row in one tone. Keep the shark gray or steel blue and the reef will do the shouting.
Those round heads and branching sprigs grow in two different ways. Branching corals grow fast and snap in storms. The rounded boulder corals add as little as a centimeter a year and can outlive the people who first dived on them.
