He wears the tall hat with a wide flat brim and a square buckle on the band, a long buttoned coat with a standing collar, and boots with a wide cuff at the knee. Behind him the girl wears a bonnet tied close to her face, a long dress with a deep band running around the hem, and a full apron over the front. Their legs are mid stride and their front feet overlap slightly, which is what stops the two figures reading as separate cutouts. Faces are drawn in profile with a single eye and a small smile each, so there is very little detail to lose if a young child colors freely. The clothing gives you six or seven large closed areas per figure, and pilgrim dress was genuinely plain, so a limited palette is historically fair as well as easier: black, one deep blue or brown, white collars and aprons, and a single buckle left as bare paper or filled in gray.
