A single cone stands upright in the center of this sheet and takes up most of the height of the page. It is built from roughly fourteen rows of overlapping scales, narrow at the tip and widening as they come down, and each scale carries one short tick mark near its top edge. That tick is the only interior line, so a scale can be filled flat or shaded from the mark outward without fighting any other detail. The rows alternate, which means no two neighboring scales line up, and the small dark wedges where three scales meet give the cone its depth before a single crayon touches it. A sprig of evergreen lies across the paper behind the base, drawn as one straight stem with pairs of long needles fanning out along it. Those needles are open strokes rather than filled shapes, so a fine tipped green reads better here than a marker. Try working the cone in two related browns, dark at the outer edge of each scale and light in the middle, and save a cool color for the needles so the sprig separates from the cone above it. Nothing touches the paper edges, which makes this one easy to mount or frame.
