A mother bear walks ahead and her cub follows at her heel, drawn at two clearly different sizes so a child can tell them apart without using any colour at all. Cubs stay with their mother for around two years before she sends them off to live alone, and for all of that time this is roughly the formation you would see. Give the cub a slightly lighter shade than the adult to keep the pair separate, and leave the ground line pale so the two animals stay the first thing you notice.
