The scarecrow stands chest deep in pumpkins, and the field runs back from him in every direction until it reaches low hills. He has a wide brimmed hat, a round face with a stitched smile and spots of color on the cheeks, a scarf knotted at the throat, and a buttoned vest over trousers held by straps. Straw bursts out of both sleeves where his hands should be. A crow circles above the hat and a second bird has settled on a bush to his left. A branch heavy with fruit and blossom reaches across the top corner. The figure itself is simple, but the field behind him is not, so this suits a child with some patience.

All those pumpkins offer a choice. Color them one uniform orange and the scarecrow stays the subject. Vary them and the field takes over instead. Both readings work. If you want the second, keep the pumpkins at the front strongest and let the ones near the hills go paler.

A scarecrow only works for a few days at a time. Crows learn quickly that a shape which never moves cannot hurt them, so growers shift theirs around the field to keep the trick alive.
