A chipmunk has climbed onto a hollow log and sits up on its back feet, turning an acorn over in both front paws. You can see straight into the open end of the log on the right, where two rings mark the cut edge of the wood, and short grain lines run along the length of the timber to break up what would otherwise be a very large empty shape. The animal itself is drawn with a completely plain coat. No stripes, no fur texture, nothing but a clean outline from ears to tail, which is unusual for a chipmunk and makes the page far easier for small hands than it would otherwise be. If an older child wants the markings, they can be drawn straight onto the blank back in pencil before any color goes down. The acorn is the smallest object on the sheet and carries a hatched cap, so it takes a fine point where everything else takes a crayon. Chipmunks are filling their burrows with nuts through the last warm weeks of the year, which is what puts this one in a November collection. Warm browns for the animal and a cooler gray brown for the log will keep the two apart.
