The size difference is the whole drawing. On the left a small boy stands with his feet planted, cape behind him and a star on his chest, looking up. On the right a robot towers over him, built from stacked boxes: a square head with an antenna, two round eyes and a smaller lens at the side, a panelled chest with dials, arms made of segmented tubes ending in heavy claws, and thick blocky legs on wide flat feet.
Because the robot is made entirely of rectangles and circles, it is far easier to color neatly than a person would be. Children who find faces frustrating usually settle straight into something like this.
A useful trick: give the robot cool metallic shades and the boy one hot color. The page then reads instantly as small and brave against big and cold, which is what it is about.
The word robot is only about a hundred years old. The Czech writer Karel Capek used it in a 1920 play, borrowing a word that meant forced labor, and it spread into every language within a decade.
