You are standing behind the hero for this one, looking past him at what he has decided to stop. He is braced with one arm out and a flat palm pressed against the front of a locomotive, the other arm swung back for balance, cape lifting. The engine fills the upper half of the page: a round boiler face, a lamp, a chimney and a heavy angled plow across the bottom of it, drawn in bold hazard stripes. Two rails run away beneath them both, narrowing as they go.
The striped plow is the one part already filled in dark. Everything else is open.
Drawing the figure from behind is unusual on a sheet like this and it helps. With no face to get right, a child can concentrate on the cape and the engine, which are the two large satisfying shapes.
Keep the rails pale. They are what give the page its depth and heavy color flattens them.
A loaded freight train needs well over a mile to stop from speed, because steel wheels on steel rail have very little grip. That is the real reason level crossings matter so much.
