A lone figure stands on a summit, turned to the right, hands resting at his belt and a cape hanging behind him. He is deliberately small against the landscape, which is the whole point of the composition.

The mountain below takes up the bottom half of the sheet and is built entirely from large angular facets meeting along straight edges. Nothing is hatched and nothing is shaded. Further peaks rise on both sides and taper away toward the edges of the page.

All that flat rock is a shading exercise rather than a coloring one. Taking each facet a different strength of the same gray or brown turns the mountain solid, and the easiest rule is to go darker as the facets face away from the top of the page. An older child can spend a long time on this quite happily.

The figure works best kept bright and simple against it. One strong color on the suit and one on the cape is enough, and the smaller he stays in tone the bigger the mountain reads. Leaving the sky as bare paper is intentional here and holds the whole thing together, so resist filling it in.
