Side on and facing right, this dog has clearly been given a job and is pleased about it. The tongue hangs out under a short smiling muzzle, one round eye looks ahead through a narrow mask band, and two soft ears fall either side of the head.
The cape is knotted at the throat and lifts back across the whole length of the back, ending in a point past the tail. It takes up nearly a third of the drawing, which makes it the most useful area on the sheet for anyone wanting a bold result quickly.
The body itself is one large unbroken oval. There are no spots, no patches and no fur strokes anywhere on it. That was a choice made when the art was drawn: an empty coat lets a child invent any breed they like, and it means a single crayon finishes the animal.
A classic approach is one color for the dog and a contrasting one for the cape, with the mask picked out to match the cape so the costume reads as a set. The four paws are small closed shapes at the bottom and take a darker tone well. The nose is the only solid area and needs nothing done to it.
