A young pirate stands square to the reader, drawn whole from the brim of her tricorn hat down to the soles of her boots. The coat is the big event here: wide lapels, a turned back cuff on each sleeve, and two columns of round buttons running the length of the front. A loose gathered shirt shows at the chest beneath it, and a broad belt with a square buckle crosses the waist above plain trousers tucked into tall boots. She holds a curved cutlass point down in her left hand, the blade sweeping off toward the corner of the sheet. Heavy waves of hair fall well past her shoulders, and a few freckles sit on each cheek.
Nothing on this page is filled in, so a young child can take it in large pieces: coat, shirt, trousers, boots, hat. The buttons and the buckle are the only small shapes, which makes them a good reward to save for last.
That long buttoned coat is not a costume invention. A justaucorps cut much like it was ordinary outdoor dress across the early 1700s, and a woman who went to sea went in one, because it was simply what sailors wore. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were taken off the same sloop in 1720 dressed exactly so.
