Framing is what sets this one apart. Jagged rock faces rise on both sides and nearly close over the top, leaving a rough keyhole of open space, and the ninja is crouched inside it with both fists up and his weight on his toes. The rock is drawn as long tapering strokes that follow the shape of each face, so the walls have grain and direction rather than being flat. At the bottom a pool of solid black sits between the stones, already filled in, which anchors the whole picture. Working from the outside in suits this drawing. Take the rocks first in two or three grays or browns, following the direction of the strokes, then come to the figure last so he stays the cleanest thing on the page. His outfit needs only a couple of tones. Leaving the crevice opening pale keeps the sense of light coming through from behind. Older children like the hiding and watching idea and often add a detail of their own in the gap above. The shapes are big enough for crayons but interesting enough to hold up under pencils.
