Seven swords fan out around a hooded figure inside a deep ornamental border of scrollwork and curling clouds.

Arrangement is the whole idea. A hooded figure sits at the center and seven swords fan out around him like spokes, four to one side and three to the other, each with a wrapped handle and a long straight blade. A guard separates handle from blade on every one. Framing all of it is a deep rectangular border filled with scrollwork, heavier at the corners, with curling clouds banked along the bottom and a rosette at the center of the lower edge. Small stars are scattered through the open space. Because the swords repeat, they beg to be treated as a set. Seven slightly different handle colors around the ring look terrific and take almost no planning. Blades can stay white, which keeps the page from going heavy, or take the faintest gray if you want them to read as steel. The border is fine work and rewards a light, even hand rather than a bold one. Symmetry means mistakes show, so this is a sheet for someone who likes precision. It frames well once finished, which is not true of every page in this collection.
