Nothing competes with the character on this page. A young ninja plants both feet wide, drops his weight, brings one fist forward and holds the other back, and that is the entire drawing. There is no ground line, no scenery and no border. The outfit is a hood, a crossed tunic, a knotted belt with two long tails, loose trousers and a pair of laced sneakers, and the shapes inside it are large and few. Eyes above the mask are angled into a scowl that children find funny rather than frightening. Because there is so little to get wrong, this is the sheet to hand to the youngest colorist at the table. Crayons will not spoil it. Fat shapes, thick outlines and generous gaps mean a three year old can stay roughly inside the lines and still end up with something that looks finished. For older children the empty background becomes the assignment instead: add a horizon, a rooftop, a full moon, or a burst of speed lines behind the punch. Printed on thicker paper it also works well as a cut out figure.
