Very little of this arc is drawn as a solid line. The bands are mostly dashes and short broken strokes with only the outermost curve fully joined, which leaves the sky feeling airy and gives the butterflies room to pass through it. Five of them are placed across the page at different sizes and angles, two on the left, two on the right and one small one tucked near the middle, each with patterned wings, a segmented body and a pair of curled antennae. Slim wildflower sprigs with tiny buds rise between the bands, and two rounded shrubs sit at the bottom corners. Broken lines are harder to color than closed ones because there is no boundary telling you where to stop, so this suits a child old enough to hold a line in their head rather than follow one on paper. That same quality makes it lovely with watercolor, where a wash can drift across the gaps on purpose. Butterflies and rainbows both depend on the same trick of light, since the shimmer on a butterfly wing comes from its structure splitting light rather than from any pigment at all.
