This mandala builds outward in four rings, and the petals grow with each one. At the middle sits a small open circle, ringed by a tight rosette of narrow points. Beyond that the petals lengthen and widen until the outermost ring reaches nearly to the edge of the sheet, each petal drawn as a long teardrop with a sharp tip.

Every petal carries the same interior treatment, a fine run of hatching that follows the curve of the outline and fades inward. That shading is already on the page, so a light hand works better here than heavy pigment, which would bury the lines that give the design its dimension.

There is no outer border and no background, and the white margin around the design is wide. The shape floats, which suits framing and makes it forgiving if your paper is not perfectly square in the printer.

Work ring by ring rather than petal by petal. The symmetry only shows if a whole ring shares a tone, and stepping the value up or down as you move outward turns a flat design into something that appears to open toward you.
