A cartoon child kneels in the soil and holds a young tree steady while it settles into its new mound, with a spade standing upright in the ground behind it. It is the single most recognisable Earth Day picture after the planet itself, and it gives a child something to talk about while they colour: a tree planted on Earth Day in 1970 would be over fifty years old now.
