Around the outside of this design the petal tips alternate in shape, one drawn to a sharp point and the next rounded into a heart, and that alternation repeats through every layer as the pattern steps inward. Inside each petal a set of fine lines follows the outline over and over like contours on a map, which builds an optical depth the flat shapes alone would not have. At the middle the layers compress into a dense many petaled flower no bigger than a coin. The important thing to notice before starting is line weight. Most of this drawing prints in light gray rather than black, so it reads as delicate on paper but also means a heavy marker will cover the contour lines entirely and waste the best part of the design. Colored pencil used lightly, or leaving alternate contour bands white, keeps them working. Treating the two petal shapes as two separate colors that swap places around each ring is the quickest way to bring out the alternating structure the title describes.
