A peacock stands in profile facing left with its tail fanned out behind it in a broad half circle. The fan is made of separate feathers, each ending in a rounded eye shape drawn as two nested rings, and they are layered in rows so the outer feathers sit behind the inner ones rather than beside them. Count the eyes and there are about fifteen. The bird itself is kept plain against all that pattern. Its body is one smooth blank shape, its neck curves up to a small head with a short crest of three thin plumes, and it stands on two slim legs with splayed toes. Only the eye is filled in. This is the sheet in the set that rewards a careful colorist, because the tail can be treated as fifteen small identical problems or as one big graded sweep, and the two approaches produce completely different pages. Peacocks turn up everywhere in Diwali decoration, on rangoli floors, on lamps and on printed cloth, largely because the bird is associated with Lakshmi. Blues and greens are traditional but nothing here requires them.
