The table is loaded and the family is taking their seats around it, chairs pulled out, a roast turkey on a platter in the middle with side dishes, a jug and a stack of plates around it. Drawn in the simple style, the food shapes are generous and clear rather than finely worked. More sits on this table than in the quieter prayer scene elsewhere in this collection, so it takes a little longer.

Start with the turkey and get it right, because everything else on the table takes its cue from it. A golden brown built in two passes, lighter across the top of the breast where the skin catches the light, will look roasted. Then go around the side dishes choosing colors that differ from the bird, greens and reds, so the platter stays the center of attention.

The bird on that platter is almost certainly a Broad Breasted White, which accounts for nearly every turkey raised commercially in the United States. The white feathers were bred in deliberately, because darker plumage leaves visible dark pin marks in the skin after plucking and shoppers rejected them.
